Probe Kwara Inspector's Death In Custody, Family Begs IG

The family of a police inspector, Taiye Atobiloye, who died after being detained at the ‘D’ Division of the Kogi State Police Command, has urged the new Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate the incident.

Following the inspector’s, the former IG, Usman Baba, gave an order for an autopsy to be conducted on the corpse.

He had sworn that justice would be served in the matter.

The autopsy report, which was obtained by Saturday PUNCH, revealed that the policeman had violent marks on his body.

He was also said to have been starved and had hypertension.

However, the deceased’s family lamented the silence of the police authorities regarding the outcome of investigation.

City Round had reported how Taiye, who was attached to the Oke Onigbin Police Division, Kwara State, was posted to the Zone 8 Police Command, Lokoja, Kogi State, on special duty.

Taiye’s family alleged that he died in the cell after being tortured.

The elder brother of the deceased, Joshua Atobiloye, told City Round that the family had received no official response from the police despite the petitions sent to them.

He said, “We want to bury our brother but the outcome of investigation is taking too long. We have not received any response from them and the corpse is still at the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja. The police have yet to officially respond to the request of the family.

“On behalf of the entire family, we are appealing to the new IG to assist us and use his good offices to look into the matter, so the family can conduct the burial on time.

“We have written petitions and the autopsy report showed that our brother was tortured. We want to bury him by the end of this month as soon as we receive a response from them.”
