Private School Owners In Kwara Protest Over Gov't Multiple Taxation

By Adedayo Said

The Kwara State Private schools Proprietors under the aegis of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) have accused the Kwara State Government of imposing excessive taxes on its members.

NAPPS Kwara State Chapter early today staged a Peaceful protest at the entrance of the Kwara State Ministry of Education to express their dissatisfaction over multiple taxations by the Kwara State Government through her tax agency KW-IRS.

One of the leaders of the Association who spoke to Kwara Reporters under anonymity during the Protest stated that the association has given the Kwara state government 72 hours to reverse its decisions on the multiple taxation or face with mother of all protest.

"We are tired of the Kwara State Government's multiple taxations by its agency KW-IRS and we can't take it anymore. Recently we are asked to pay up to nine (9) taxes before we can be given Clearance to register WAEC and NECO in our various schools. One of our members is expected to pay N2,500,000 for 'Land Charges' before they can be allowed to register WAEC and NECO in her school aside from our annual license renewal fees."

"We are here today on a peaceful protest to register our displeasure in regards to this matter and we believe the state government should do the needful because if nothing is done after 3 days we will be back here with our teachers and students and we all know what that means."

Another source also said; we are job creators and we have been helping the government to employ graduates in the labour Market and I don't believe this kind of wicked action should be meted on us. Like me I have up to 20 staff members under my payroll and with these multiple taxations how am I expected to pay them? The government should reverse these wicked policies or we will come back here to shut down the Ministry."

The sources further said they are ready to pay renewal fees of their license but other taxes is a no to them.
