Four Die In Ondo Auto Crash

FRSC links incident to excessive speed, careless driving

About four persons lost their lives in the early hours of yesterday in an auto crash that occurred at Shasha market axis along the busy Owo-Akure highway in Akure North Local Council of the state.

The Guardian gathered that the victims, two males and two females, died on the spot when an ash colour, Toyota Sienna bus marked: LND 778YG they were travelling in, had head-on collision with a Toyota Hiace 18-seater bus with registration number KTN 298 YJ.

Eyewitnesses said 12 other passengers were injured in the accident, with the crash causing gridlock on the highway.
According to eyewitnesses, it took the help of motorists and nearby residents to rescue some survivors from the wreckage.

A security personnel at the scene of the accident, said the driver of the Toyota Sienna attempted to overtake a truck on the single lane highway when he collided with the Toyota Hiace bus coming from Lagos State.

Confirming the accident, Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) , Ezekiel SonAllah, said the accident was caused by wrong overtaking and excessive speeding.

SonAllah said his men evacuated three dead bodies from the accident scene.

While disclosing that the remains of the deceased persons had been deposited at the morgue of the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, he said 12 injured victims were already receiving treatment at the same hospital.

The Sector Commander said: “I wish to call on the general public to avoid travelling at night because of the hazard associated with night travelling.

“Drivers are strongly urged to avoid speeding above the specified speed limit. All vehicle owners, especially commercial drivers must install a speed limit device.

“Passengers have responsibility to report any driver that does not obey traffic rules and regulations, while plying on the road.”
