Social Media Vs Voter Reality: Hakeem Lawal Trails Behind In Kwara Guber Polls With 3% Popularity - AbdulSalam AbdulKadir

The case of Hakeem Lawal and 9ja Parrot: Kwarans do not vote on social media
Only 3% of Kwarans would vote SDP’s Hakeem Lawal if elections held today

Kwara’s social media space was flooded in recent weeks with results of an alleged poll touting SDP candidate, Hakeem Lawal as most likely winner of the 2023 Gubernatorial elections in Kwara State. These claims were laid to rest after an exclusive release on popular Channels TV show, Politics Today which saw Lawal suffer a crushing defeat at the polls.

Conducted by globally accredited NOI Polls, only 3% of Kwara’s voting population responded in favor of the SDP aspirant when asked “Suppose the governorship election is being conducted today, who are you likely to vote for?”.

These results contradict outcomes of a similar poll conducted by 9ja Parrot on social media which put Lawal in the lead in a state where an internet subscription stands at less than 0.5% and almost a third of the population live below the poverty line.

In an unprecedented plot twist, despite a shaky lead, Governor AbdulRazaq’s declining popularity is on the rise, as 31% of Kwarans remain undecisive and pass a vote of no confidence on the incumbent. PDP’s Yaman Abdullahi came in 2nd place, ahead of SDP’s Lawal.

Time will tell how the polity shapes up for other gubernatorial candidates such as Yakubu Gobir of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and NNPP’s Abdulraheem Oba.
