By Adedayo Said

The Kwara State Fire Service on Saturday recovered two corpses along Sobi road in Ilorin, the state capital, following Friday’s downpour.

Personnel of the fire service removed the two human bodies and a Toyota Yaris car with Reg No APP544E from the Asa river, Opposite Olusola Saraki Abattoir, along Sobi Road in the Ilorin metropolis.

It was gathered that the incident occurred during Friday’s downpour when the victims were struggling to drive through the bridge and suddenly got stuck by the flood, which pushed them into the river.

Until the time of filing this report, relations of the deceased are to claim the corpses.

Items found in their car included Islamic religious scriptures, among others.

According to the fire service spokesman, Hassan Adekunle, in Ilorin on Saturday, “the rescue operation was a joint one.

He said the victims overestimated the volume of water flow and decided to cross the road.

“All the people in the neighborhood gave their full support to the firemen throughout the operation,” he said.

The Director of Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, urged the general public to avoid driving whenever there is heavy rainfall.

In a related development, the Friday downpour caused serious economic losses to fish farmers in some parts of Ilorin.

Our correspondent gathered that some fish farmers in Egbejila, Akerebiata, and Asa dam axis had their fish farms washed away by the heavy floods.

During visits to Amilegbe, Unity road bridges, Egbejila, and Asa dam areas, people who could swim were seen with fishing nets carting away fish washed away by the heavy flood.

Some members of the public, who were ready to buy, went away with the fish at giveaway prices.
