Stop Blackmailing Us- The Sacked 'Sunset' Kwara Teachers Lament

By Daud Musbaudeen

The sacked Kwara state teachers on Tuesday, August 29, 2022, called on the state government to stop blackmailing them by calling them sunset teachers.

In a radio program titled Igbimon Oluyanana on SBS 96.3 Fm, the sacked teachers expressed their grief and bitterness over the state government for calling them sunset and most importantly 'unqualified', when they were educated, graduates.

One of the sacked teachers, Mr Saheed said, " it is so disheartening that the present government could call its citizens bad names like 'sunset', we implore the government led by Governor AbdulRasaq AbdulRahman to stop calling us such names".

"the last time we discussed with the Governor, he said he was convinced the way we relate to him, why will they say we are not qualified to teach"

In December 2020, Kwara state Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq terminated the appointment of over two thousand teachers who were employed by then Kwara Governor, Abdulfatai Ahmed.

Kwara State Government made it known in a statement signed by the Press Secretary Ministry Of Education and Human Capital that the number of workers is higher than the one approved by the state executive council.

Furthermore, the government said that the sacked teachers do not have the recommended certificate to teach like the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) certificate, more reason they were sacked.

In response, Mr. Saheed said " when this government emerged they conducted screening for us through the head of the service and they find that we are qualified and competent to teach"

"Those that were given disengagement letter among us then, they said the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) said they don't have right to be in the classroom because they have HNDs and ONDs and they were disengaged"

"Only for us who are qualified and compete to suddenly see it online (on our portal) that we have been sacked after collecting up to nine months' salary after the screening"

When asked what they want the government to do for them, Mr. Saheed spoke on behalf of all the sacked teachers "what we are asking is: we are Kwarans and we deserve to work in Kwara. We have every right to work in Kwara so far we have a certificate to back it up.
