Title: Emir Of Ilorin Appoints Abdulrazaq, Gobir, Saliu Mustapha, Others... Details Of Their Predecessors

Gov. Abdulrazaq congratulates new Ilorin title holders

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu Gambari has announced the appointment of new chiefs.

The Ilorin monarch, who is the Chairman, Kwara state Council of Chiefs, had new persons appointed to fill vacant traditional titles in the Ilorin Emirate Council on Thursday.

Dr. Alimi Abdulrazaq

Eldest son of late Alhaji AbdulGaniyu Folorunsho Abdul-Razaq , Dr Alimi Abdulrazaq has also stepped into his father’s shoes by getting named as new Mutawale of Ilorin.

The First Republic minister had until his death last year maintained the status of Mutawale of Ilorin. When you talk about the late AGF Abdulrazaq , a lot of firsts come into the picture.

He was the first indigene of Ilorin to become a degree holder, the first lawyer from the old Northern Region and the first Senior Advocate from the region.

His wife, Alhaja Raliat, was also the first woman to drive a car in the northern region while the new Mutawalle of Ilorin; Dr Alimi Abdulrazaq has under his belt, a unique achievement – the first Ilorin indigene to receive PhD degree in Law.

Waziri Yakubu Gobir

Yakubu Gobir, a pharmacist and well-known philanthropist, who is also the Waziri of Hausaland and a gubernatorial aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last general election has emerge as the new Madawaki (Madaki) of Ilorin Emirate.

Waziri Gobir is becoming the second Madawaki of Ilorin since the demise of the first Madwaki of Ilorin, Alhaji Yahaya Madawaki from Oriokoh, who was conferred with the title in 1955 and died in 1998.

Mallam Saliu Mustapha

APC National Chairmanship aspirant, Mallam Saliu Mustapha has also emerged as new Turaki of Ilorin.

This was no doubt considered unique apparently because of the statuses of the former holders of the chieftaincy title.

The first Turaki of Ilorin was a wealthy man, Alhaji Sanni Okin while second republic Senate Leader, late Dr Olusola Saraki became the second Turaki of Ilorin in 1974–on account of his ‘uncommon’ generosity.

The late Dr Olusola Saraki retained this prestigious title before getting a higher position- Waziri of Ilorin in 2005.

The first Waziri of Ilorin was late Mallam Muhammadu Gobir, who was honoured with the title in 1965.

The late popular politician, Dr Olusola Saraki , combined the two chieftaincy titles until the then Governor Bukola Saraki was named as new Turaki of Ilorin in 2006.

Late Dr Olusola Saraki remained the Waziri of Ilorin until his death in 2012 and a new Waziri of Ilorin was not named until 22nd July 2018 when the Emir of Ilorin zeroed the choice on Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, who was then serving as President of the Senate.

Like his late father did, Dr Bukola Saraki, had also combined the two chieftaincy titles; Waziri and Turaki for three straight years.

He was named as Waziri of Ilorin exactly three years ago. Interestingly, a new Turaki of Ilorin has also been named on same 22nd July.

Alhaji Kawu Baraje

The former acting PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Kawu Baraje has been named as new Tafida of Ilorin. He replaces late Dr Amuda Aluko, a top politician and medical doctor, who died on 15th May 2020.

Other who were also honoured with chieftaincy titles on Thursday include; popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Faruq Onikijipa – Grand Mufti of Ilorin, Alhaji Saka Onimago – Shetimma of Ilorin, and Alhaji Kawu Agaka – Dan Iya of Ilorin, Dr AbdulKadir Alfa Oba-Solagberu –Mallam Ubandoma of Ilorin and Yaqub Aliagan -Sarkin Mallamai of Ilorin.

Meanwhile, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has congratulated the new traditional title holders, while asking Allah to grant them success and long life in their services to the people of Ilorin.

“I congratulate all the new title holders as announced by Mai Martaba, the Emir of Ilorin, Dr Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari (CFR). I am convinced that the decision of the Emir was based on the track records of these illustrious sons of Ilorin over the years. I have no doubt that they will discharge the duties of their offices to the admiration of all.

I equally congratulate the Mai Martaba on the joyous occasion and the advancement of the culture and tradition of his forebears, as well as the families honoured with these important traditional titles.

I charge the new title holders to endeavour to join hands with the Ilorin Emirate Council to promote the larger interest of the community at all times’ the Governor said in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rafiu Ajakaye on Thursday.
