COVID-19: APC Stalwart Donates N.5m Worth Food Items To Irepodun People

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Shola Odetundun, has donated food items worth N500,000 to the people of Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State as part of measures to mitigate the state economic effects of coronavirus pandemic.

The food items including several bags of semovita and indomie noodles were presented to the beneficiaries at a brief ceremony held in Omu-Aran, Headquarters of the local government area yesterday.

At the distribution of the items were a member of the state House of Assembly representing Irepodun Constituency, Hon. Omotayo Felix Awodiji and the state Commissioner for Social Development, Mrs Bosede Aremu.

Addressing the people, Odetundun said he resolved to procure the food stuff for onward distribution to the people to cushion the effects of the current stay at home directive of the state government.

He noted that artisans and others in the informal sector of the economy were the worst hit in the policy of the government, which was designed to ward off the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

The APC stalwart, who pointed out that the distribution of the food was devoid of party affiliation, said it would complement the efforts of the state government.

"We are doing this to cushion the effects of our people staying at home since most of them are artisans, farmers, transporters and others in the informal sector. This gesture is to complement the efforts of our Governor and what his government is doing.

"Government cannot do everything. Though this is the first of its kind I'm doing, I know it will go a long way in meeting the needs of about 500 people. This will cushion the effects of the problem people are passing through and make them stay at home.

"We are distributing the food stuff without party affiliation; the items are for everybody. Initially, we wanted to take the food stuff to various households but we immediately dropped the plan when the government procedure for distribution of palliative came. We reached out to our representative to help us open channel for distribution", Odetundun said.

The lawmaker representing Irepodun Constituency, Awodiji cautioned the people not to abuse stay at home order by playing games, which usually involve large congregations.

He said coronavirus pandemic was real and admonished the people at the grassroot to maintain social distancing, urging them to support the government's efforts at containing the transmission of the virus in the state.

The Commissioner for Social Development, Mrs Abosede Aremu, commended the donor of the food stuff for taking it upon himself to assist the less privileged in Irepodun local government area.

Also speaking, the Chairman of APC in Irepodun local government, Mr Aransiola Oyeyemi Samson, thanked the donor and urged other well to do individuals in the area to emulate him.

Oyeyemi, who applauded Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his efforts at curtailing COVID-19 spread, also thanked him
for the ongoing infrastructural projects across Irepodun Local Government.
