Kwara First Lady Takes Sickle Cell Awarness Campaign To Kwara Central Senatorial District (Photos)


The First Lady of Kwara state and Founder, Ajike People Support Center, Dr Mrs Olufolake Abdulrazaq has taken awareness campaign against sickle cell to Kwara central senatorial district on Monday 21st of September 2020.

Dr Mrs Abdulrazaq and the Ajike People Support Center embarked on the awareness campaign to commemorate the sickle cell awareness month(September) which is globally set aside to intensify awareness and advocacy towards a sickle cell free society. 


The event which took place at the Ilorin east Secretariat hall had participants drawn from the local government areas that make up the Kwara Central senatorial district which includes Ilorin east, Ilorin South, Ilorin West and Asa local government were sensitized on the need to know their genotype and provide information on the management of the disease through health talks by seasoned professional and warriors.

Dr Mrs Abdulrazaq who was represented at the event by the Commissioner for Education, Hajia Bisola Ahmed stated that the event is a follow up to an awareness video by the First Lady, Mayor of Brent and the United kingdom Sickle Cell Society to usher in the 2020 sickle cell awareness month. 


The First Lady at the event implored participants to take advantage of the opportunity the event presented and take same to their respective communities.

In his remarks, the Director of personnel management, ilorin east local government, Prince Gabriel Oyebanji commended the First Lady of Kwara state for the laudable initiative which he explained would create a safe haven for children's growth and Development. 


He appealed to traditional leaders, Community leaders, Religion leaders and Press men who he described as the major gate keepers in the society to use their platforms to champion the campaign.

A resource person, Dr Nurudeen Adana while delivering his lecture described sickle as a catastrophic disease which can be easily prevented. 


He explained the danger inherent in being negligent in taking adequate precaution in preventing the disease

Another resource person, Dr. miss Titilayo Makinde who is a sickle cell carrier shared her experience on the disease and further stated methodology involved in managing it.

She advised the participants on the need to know their genotype before marriage as it is cheaper to prevent the disease as against living with it or charting course for the cure.


Mr Promise Oluwatimileyin on behalf of the participants appreciated the first Lady of Kwara state for raising public awareness to combat and curtail the spread of the disease.

A session was later devoted to free genotype testing for willing participants at the event.

The awareness campaign is expected to continue on Wednesday 23rd September in Kwara North Senatorial District and on the 25th of September in Kwara South Senatorial District. 


The event which was sponsored by the First Lady and supported by Tuyil Pharmaceutical industry had in attendance Non Governmental Organizations with bias for the eradication of Sickle Cell Disease such as the Damilola Sickle Cell Foundation and the Pearl Foundation.
