Kwara Deputy Speaker Condemns Violence Against Women, Seeks Justice For Victims


The Deputy Speaker of the Kwara state House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Raphael Adetiba-Olanrewaju has condemned in very strong terms the increasing reports of rape cases, sexual assaults and killings in the society in recent times.

The Lawmaker who represents Oke-Ero Constituency at the Kwara State House of Assembly, in a statement on Saturday called for justice for Abdulrahman Safau Omowumi, Maimuna Mohammed and all other victims of Rape, Sexual assault, Homicide, Domestic violence and Sexual violence.

The lawmaker who insisted that perpetrators should never go unpunished said having in place punitive measures in Nigeria’s criminal and penal code will serve as deterrence to perpetrators involved in the act.

In his words, "Violence against women in any form must be discourage and condemned in our society and as a House of Assembly with responsibility to make laws that will protect  Kwarans and promote peace in our society, we need to make the penalties for rape stiffer to be sufficient deterrence for those who are involved in this acts, or who even desire to be involved.

"We have to save our future generations, because these girls and women are the future of this nation and necessary measures must be put in place to protect them against any forms of violence."

"I urge the law enforcement agencies to do thorough investigations and bring perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice immediately so that none will go unpunished. And I also encourage the victims and the society to come forward with informations about the offenders so that justice can be served."
