246 Fake Schools: SUBEB Summons Kwara 16 LG Education Secretaries

Indications have emerged that the 246 fake schools allegedly discovered in Kwara State, could have been used by officials to siphon public fund.

With the discovery, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has summoned education secretaries of the 16 Local Government Education Authorities to an emergency meeting.

The meeting, according to SUBEB’s Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Bayo Onimago, was to ascertain the veracity of the report that said fictitious schools were smuggled into the wage bill of the board with both teaching and non-teaching staff.

He disclosed that the agency had launched investigation into the allegation and directed education secretaries to also carry out investigations to unmask the perpetrators.

Onimago, however, vowed that the board would act proactively on anyone caught in the deal over the nonexistent schools. He disclosed that 468 junior secondary schools and 1,577 primary schools exist on the board’s list.

The permanent secretary said teachers employed at the end of the past government, otherwise known as “sunset teachers”, were being screened in line with the directive of the governor.
