Kwara Assembly Concludes Quizzing Of Suspended LG Chairmen

Kwara State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government and chieftaincy affairs, which is probing allegations of financial misappropriation against the 16 local government Chairmen in the state have concluded interrogation of the local government chairmen and relevant officials connected to the allegations.

The Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi Salihu who was present at the closing session of the investigation panel appreciated the cooperation of the suspended local government chairmen, Kwara State Internal Revenue Service, Office of the Accountant General and other stakeholders in the course of the investigations.

Hon Yakubu said the absence of some suspended chairmen before the House committee is a tactical admittance of guilt on their part. "It shows they have no record to present to prove their innocence over the allegations leveled against them", he said.

He added that "We are not here to witch-hunt or harass anyone and you can see the process has been civil. It is simple, if you have no skeleton in your cupboards, you should be bold to appear and clear the air before the committee".

Referring to the local government Chairmen, Hon. Yakubu said :  "you collected your June and July salaries, that shows you are only suspended and nothing more, why can't they tell the public they are still drawing salaries from the LGs purse?, he queried.

"You didn't go to court because you were alleged of financial misappropriation, you only went to court because you were suspended, that is morally low, whatever we do, we should remember posterity and our unborn generations", he added.

In his remark, the Chairman House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Abdulgafar Ayinla said they have gathered documents and information from all the 16 local governments, save for 4 suspended local government chairmen who declined their invitation. and  have been done justice, save 4 that failed to appear.

He said suspended chairmen of Irepodun, Ekiti, Ilorin West and Ilorin East local governments  failed to appear before the committee for interrogation and added that the committee will commence oversight to establish facts behind some of the submissions received by various stakeholders during the cause of investigation.
