Saraki Summons Emergency Meeting Of NASS Leaders

The leadership of the National Assembly will meet on Tuesday, August 7, over the possible reconvening of the federal legislature to consider some national issues, Daily Trust reports.

The National Assembly leadership comprises both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

NAIJ.com gathered that the meeting, is slated for noon tomorrow, which would be followed by another meeting with the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) led by its chairman, Prof Mahmud Yakubu.

The leadership of the two chambers have come under intense pressure to reconvene the federal legislature over certain issues.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had in a letter dated July 11 requested the approval of the lawmakers for N242bn for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to commence preparations for 2019 general elections.

However, the National Assembly had on July 24 embarked on its annual recess which is scheduled to last till September 25.

Ahmad Lawan, the Senate Leader, had urged his colleagues to reconvene in order to consider the president's request on INEC budget, saying there was urgent need for the lawmakers to do so.

The chairman of the Senate committee on agriculture, Abdullahi Adamu, said the senators should not have adjourned without considering the president's request on the election fund.

In a previous report by NAIJ.com, the presidency on Sunday, August 5 appealed to the National Assembly (NASS) to reconvene as urgent matters pending before it may affect the running of Nigeria and matters affecting Nigerians.

The appeal was made by the senior special adviser to the president on National Assembly matters, Senator Ita Enang at a news conference in Lagos.

Some of the pending urgent issues before the adjournment included the approval of a supplementary budget to fund the 2018 budget and the 2019 general elections.
