Refuse Takesover UNILORIN Campus

For the past few weeks now heaps of refuse have littered some areas in the premises of the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Kwara State, which it is not only irritating and unpleasant to sight but also unhealthy to the environment.

Our correspondent who visited the school campus took pictures of heap of refuse at the the front of the Lagos Female hostel close to the school car park and other areas within the premises of the University of Ilorin.

According to a student interviewed said efforts has been made by the students to get the refuse evacuated but all was abortive. And we are also made to understand that the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by the Non-Academic Teaching Staff Union (NASU) has been responsible for the ugly situation.

All three non-academic staff unions – Non-academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) – which form an umbrella for junior and senior non-academic staff in the nation’s universities and research centres have been on strike since December 4 2017.

They proceeded on the industrial action over what they termed Government’s failure to pay their earned allowances. The Federal government has since ignored the striking workers.

As a result of the strike, the Bursary and Administrative sections, technicians/engineers in the Works and Services Unit, and Hospital/Health centres of some universities in the country have withdrawn their services.

A staff of the Students Affair Unit of the university who does want his name mentioned, confirmed to this medium that those in charge of clearing the waste have been on strike since last year.

He added that the authorities is much aware of the situation and is doing everything possible to ensure that the heaps of refuse are cleared in time, noting that the management equally know the health implications.

“The school management is much aware of the situation and I confirm to you that efforts are on to evacuate the refuse as soon as possible,” the official said.
